Organic essential oils: Making your everyday life smell better

You want your home to smell good – but not like a "car air freshener from 2003" or a chemistry lab. You want real essential oils that you can use for aromatherapy, skincare, DIY projects, and even household chores – without all the hocus-pocus.

Welcome to the fragrance universe of organic essential oils (and yes: organic oil isn't just for salad). In our Organic Essential Oils category, you will find suitable classics like orange, lavandin, peppermint, and more.

What are essential oils actually?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant essences. This means: a few drops go a long way, because you are getting pure plant power in miniature, not just "perfume."

And that is exactly why quality matters.

Organic stays organic (not "organic-ish")

Organic oils come from certified organic farming – and reputable manufacturers also pay attention to authenticity (e.g., through lab analyses like GC/MS). For you, this means: fewer surprises, more reliability.
In short: You are buying fragrance with substance – not mysteries in a bottle.

How are essential oils made? (Spoiler: not by magic, but from plant parts)

Depending on which plant part is processed, the oil type smells different – and is used differently, too.

  • Distillation of flowers: e.g., lavender/lavandin
  • Distillation of green herb harvests (stems/leaves): e.g., rosemary, mint, lemongrass, citronella
  • Distillation of fruits: e.g., laurel
  • Distillation of leaves/twigs: e.g., eucalyptus, tea tree
  • Distillation of resin: e.g., pine/resin
  • Distillation of wood: e.g., cedarwood
  • Cold pressing: citrus oils like orange & lemon (usually from the peel)

An example from the shop: Organic Orange is cold-pressed from orange peel – so that the fragrance and beneficial properties remain intact.

Instant atmosphere at home

You just need an aroma lamp or a diffuser – and 30 seconds of motivation.

Aroma lamp:

  • Water in the bowl
  • 3–6 drops of oil (start low!)
  • Light the tea light → done

Diffuser (brief & effective)

  • better brief and repeated (e.g., 20–30 minutes) instead of running all day nonstop
  • for a small room, 3–5 drops are plenty (yes, really – your diffuser is not a hot tub 😉)

Pro-tip: Always start with fewer drops. You can always add more later. If you use too much, the only fix is "open the windows and hope." 😅

Daily use: inhalation, skin, ointments, massage, steam bath & more

Inhalation (if you want "clear nose" vibes)

  • Bowl of hot water
  • 1–2 drops of oil added
  • Inhale for 2–5 minutes, take a break

Many love mint for a "clear head" – in the shop, for example, Organic Peppermint (distilled, menthol-fresh, concentration-friendly).

Facial steam bath for colds (gentler than full-on inhalation)

  • warm (not boiling) water
  • 1 drop of oil
  • 2–3 minutes – done

Rule: If it stings → stop immediately. Your face is not a cooking pot.

Skincare & body: please never apply "neat/undiluted"

Essential oils are concentrates. They should always be diluted when used on the skin (in a carrier oil, cream, or ointment).

Guideline:

  • Face: 0.25–0.5 %
  • Body: 1 %
  • spot application: max. 2 % (if you tolerate it well)

Rule of thumb: 1 % ≈ 2 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil.

Ointments, balms, compresses & massage (the "self-care" track)

Massage oil (easy):

  • 10 ml carrier oil + 2 drops (1 %)
  • mix, done

Balm/ointment:

  • Shea butter or similar + a few drops (depending on concentration)
  • always test on a small area first

Sauna infusion: how to do it right

In Austria, sauna infusion is practically a cultural asset. And yes: essential oils are part of it.

Important: Never drip oil directly onto the hot stones.
Here is the safe way:

  • 1 liter of water
  • 3–5 drops of oil (to start)
  • mix → pour over stones with the ladle

For a sauna feeling, "fresh" or "woody" scents are popular – e.g., mint/resin/woody notes. If you prefer something more "relaxed": Lavandin also works wonderfully.

Our Organic Lavandin, for instance, is described as an oil with "cleansing properties" and is also used in household contexts.

Pro-tip: Less is truly more with sauna infusions. Otherwise, instead of wellness, it quickly becomes a "why are my eyes stinging?" situation. 🙃

Household: clean + good-smelling (without a chemical party)

Essential oils are not just "for scent," but also great household companions – especially in DIY recipes.

DIY Universal Cleaner (with white vinegar)

If you want to make your own universal cleaner: Our blog recipe is simple, effective, and free of nonsense.
It uses white vinegar, water, lemon peel, and essential oil (e.g., lemon or lavender/lavandin).

Mini-product starter (if you don't want 12 bottles at once)

  • Organic Essential Oil Orange (cold-pressed): Mood & home vibe
  • Organic Essential Oil Lavandin: "Evening mode," bath/household vibes
  • Organic Essential Oil Mint: Freshness & focus (dose sparingly)

You can find them all in the Organic Essential Oils category.

Mini-FAQ

Where can I buy organic essential oils in Austria?

In our shop, you'll find a dedicated Organic Essential Oils category (e.g., orange, pine resin, litsea cubeba, lemon, rosemary, etc.).

Which organic essential oils are best for aromatherapy?

For beginners, "all-rounders" make the most sense:

  • Orange for mood/atmosphere
  • Lavandin for relaxation & "unwinding"
  • Peppermint for freshness & focus

How do I recognize real organic essential oil?

Look for clear information (plant name, plant part, extraction method like distillation/cold-pressing, origin) and, ideally, quality certifications/analyses (e.g., GC/MS) that reveal adulteration or dilution.

How do organic essential oils differ from conventional oils?

Organic oils come from certified organic farming (without typical agrochemicals) and generally offer more transparency regarding origin and extraction. Conventional oils can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer.
